I saw this movie a couple months ago and thought it was a nice little flick for a quiet sunday afternoon. The story follows the normal romance guidelines of boy meets girl, etc. Both characters, simply named guy (Glen Hansard, of the irish indie band, The Frames) and girl (Marketa Irglova), are just trying to make it in the busy world. Guy works at a vaccum repair shop with his father and is a busker. Girl is a house keeper and a street vendor. The two meet in a music shop and play a song together, after this performance they hang out a few more times and fall for each other. The catch is they love each other but know they cant have each other. Guys true love is in London and girl has a husband, so this is more of a love fling. Later on, guy gets the great idea and forms a band with girl and other street performers. They go on to record an album and guy plans to head off to London to try and sell it and to get back with his girlfriend. It gets boring for a bit, but the end is really nice.
Anywho, I think I’ve given enough of the story away. The filming was done in the style of a home video. It but a nice touch to the film and made it a bit more intimate. It got a bit shakey at times, but nothing in the calibur of Cloverfield.
The music is all original and is great. Both the actors perform the songs and the chemistry of the voices are fantastic. The Soundtrack was award winning - so you know it has to be good.
Overall, this is another great movie brought to attention by Fox Searchlight.

Once – Falling Slowly
Cloverfield
Posted in Movies with tags Cloverfield, documentary style camera work, giant monsters that won't die on January 20, 2008 by Alexander GardunoWhat can I say about Cloverfield that hasn’t already been hyped up to an astronomical figure. Ever since its very enigmatic preview more than a year ago, whenever the title was mentioned, and after a brief summary to remind people what they were talking about, all would be a chitter and a chatter about what it could possibly be about. Many espoused the now debunk theory that it was just Godzilla chomping on some New Yorkers in leiu of the ever delectable Japanese.
As the story progresses you find out in no mean way, that it is without a doubt not Godzilla but rather just some wayward space traveler trying to find his way home. Of course the movie wouldn’t be so damned zesty if it could speak our language and indeed meant us no physical harm. But unfortunately the movie didn’t end with it lapping some tea from a giant reverse-jointed arm claw thing (as my good friend Brett would have wanted). No, as ever we were treated with high adrenaline scenes, made nauseatingly intense by the way the film was well, filmed. Not to say that it didn’t add a bit of luster to the film but by the end I was just a tad bit queasy.
All in all, Cloverfield was a good movie so long as you aren’t one of those millions of people these days that seems to crave a resolution just like I crave a good long soak in the tub and a nice Kenny G CD. But if you can get past the semi-OCD need to have it end with the good guy getting the hot chick and good old America telling it what for, then you shouldn’t see this movie. Otherwise, it’s worth the 10 bucks, and you and your friends (or if you’re lucky, a hot date) will have a good time.
I know I did.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Posted in Movies with tags cocks, Dewey Cox, gay cowboys, hilarious, Walk Hard on January 17, 2008 by Alexander Garduno
This movie, while lacking any actual motivating theme (other than hilarity) had exactly what people look for in a movie: Entertainment. And a whole lot of dong.
It made some rather sideways attempts at the famous bands back in the day, the day meaning in this case, the 50s, 60s, 70s, and what we might call right now, the present day. I’m not the biggest music buff, I usually get my Cd’s and suggestions from the other fine fellows on this site, but I loved the Bob Dylan parody.
A lot of people would give this movie poor “grades” and condemn it for it’s crude and often vulgar sense of humor, but the main focus as I’ve stated before, isn’t to put forth some eternal undying psychic ideal that the whole human race births every generation. The theme if there is one, is to remember that you can go to the movies without crying or wondering if gay cowboys really are as fascinating as everyone thinks. It’s just a bunch of friends coming together to help make people laugh and put another spin on that era of American history that’s so carved out this country’s admittedly somewhat questionable present.
In the end, I think it was the penis that made myself and the others with me, laugh so damn hard. So I guess it does have something to do with gay cowboys after all.
Goodnight.
